A Message from HIPS Board of Directors and Executive Director:

HIPS is saddened to learn of the closure of PreventionWorks! in Washington, DC.  The vital services provided by their dedicated staff and volunteers has been a wonderful partner and complement to our own services to sex workers and drug users in Washington DC. Over the last dozen years, our agencies have worked together to reach some of DC’s most neglected and vulnerable populations with proven, evidence-based programs providing access to sterile syringes, safer sex education, support and advocacy.  On behalf of HIPS Board of Directors, staff, participants, and volunteers we would like to thank PreventionWorks! for their efforts and significant impact.

Providing nonjudgmental services through a harm reduction focus to sex workers and individuals who use drugs is essential to effectively decrease the transmission of HIV, deter violence against stigmatized citizens, and improve the overall health of our community.

The loss of the health care services provided by PreventionWorks! means many DC residents will no longer have access to these crucial services. As a community, we must redouble our efforts to meet those needs. HIPS calls on the local community, foundations, DC government and local businesses to come together to help us ensure that everyone who seeks support can get it. HIPS looks forward to working with all of you.

Sincerely,

Cyndee Clay, Executive Director
Tiffanie Luckett, Chair, Board of Directors
